Adopted and Adored

The message says it all.

BuckleyThis special issue seeks to raise awareness of responsible dog ownership and support the dedicated work of organisations re-homing lost and abandoned dogs.

Australia has one of the highest levels of dog ownership worldwide, with an estimated 40 per cent of Australian households having at least one dog. This means that there are around 4 million dogs nationwide. But while Australia enjoys a high level of dog ownership, a high number of dogs are admitted into shelters. During 2008-09, the RSPCA Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

The RSPCA is a community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. alone recorded 69,383 admissions into its shelters across the country.

Each of the dogs featured in this stamp issue has been given a second chance. All five have spent time in a shelter before being adopted into adoring new families.

All men are created equal. No matter how hard you try you can never erase those words…

I’m a bit late to the party but can I just say I loved this movie. Pure, simple and just gold! It’s a movie of epic proportions; fighting for ones basic human rights, fighting for gay rights in America sure wasn’t easy. It isn’t any easy now, and it surely wouldn’t have been two decades earlier. A lot has been said about gay activism, gay rights & campaigns against homophobic people, anti-gay religious groups and broadening the human mind, this movies does just that, it truly goes to show how America or Castro – a district in California was, back around late 1970s. This is an extremely heart-rendering and sensitive movie that touches on many aspects of the lifes tapestry. I simply love how beautifully Sean Penn brings about the vulnerable, fallible side as a gay lover. Harvey Milks social standing is huge and the price he and his friends paid and stood for has liberated many.

Be Like Others

Quite a gut wrenching situation… I would call it a story except that it is not. Its reality in everyday Iran and something that is very discomforting at best. Be Like Others is a short film/documentary that explores the life behind closed curtains of the mostly youngish gay men in Iran and the lengths they go to have an operation to be with another man. It really is an intimate and unflinching look at life in Iran. It is thoroughly disturbing and sad in many ways, you come out pensive and have a lot of respect for your own life as it stands. Its really nice to see someone dared to make the effort to bring this out on film for the world to see.

Below in the synopsis of the movie documentary, visit the site and watch some of the trailers, if you get a chance and are not easily put off by strong adult themes. It isn’t your average movie. It is gut wrenching in more ways than I can think of. Be Like Others was the Official Selection of 2008 Sundance Film Festival, Teddy Award for 2008 Berlin Film Festival, Firresch Prize for 2008 Thessaloniki Documentary Festival.
