What is FTP?
File Transfer Protocol — A way of transferring files over the Internet/Intranet from one computer to another. When this process occurs in a secure or encrypted way its called SFTP. You can read more about FTP on Steven Frank’s blog.

I use SmartFTP, and have actually never been dissatisfied enough to bother using or buying anything else. The part that it’s free is a very nice bonus though. I saw something similar to this (though done through the browser) as a Firefox extension (http://www.bolinfest.com/targetalert/). This is neat though.
You can add FileZilla to the list of Windows clients. It has its fans, but I personally hate the interface - SmartFTP is much nicer. Despite its name, it’s not in any way related to the Mozilla Foundation.
The only problem I have with SmartFTP is its become nagware now. During some x hour time frame something like 8am to 5pm every time you start it up it nags you to buy a license, even if you are well within their ‘free’ license !
FileZilla is best that I’ve used for Windows. I didn’t really like the Nagware of SmartFTP but SmartFTP was actually quite nice. FileZilla was faster on loadups on my computer.
