Kathmandu Ma - Newtown

photo of the restaurant Kathmandu Ma in Newtown sydney. The table has an orangeIt will grab your attention as you go past. It’ll make you stop and look inside and ponder.. gee and it looks really nice and cozy. Colourful. I have gone past this place a number of times and wanted to go in for a meal… until the day finally arrived… we rocked up at Kathmandu Ma — a Nepalese restaurant on King Street, Newtown. The place is adorn with a lot of Nepalese souvenirs, big and small old and relatively new, right from the majestic panorama of the icy Himalayas framed against a maroon wall to the very traditional anodised metal amulets and necklaces and bracelets, the nepalese triangular flags that you see atop their shrines.

All said and done the place is neither a restaurant nor a house that people would live in. More like an un-used shop lost with the idea and sense of purpose, trying to be a house, a home, a Café or an antique shop. We were sitting next to a few clothes rack and bless his heart the guy who seemed to be the owner, manager, chef, steward and the cashier did give us a half hearted smile everytime our eyes met. He did his utmost to be the best host possible but we weren’t too taken up by the food unfortunately. The food was pretty average, a bit cold and the experience ummmm — quirky. It pays to read reviews before booking places unless you’re in the know but I was just so sure this would’ve been a fun night out. Well, to be honest we still did have a fun night out but not as far as the food was concerned and did I mentioned the rice looked microwaved. The wooden serving spoon in the rice bowl might have been just as old as the very establishment itself. Spotty, scratched and discoloured little wooden spatula — it had served three times its due lifetime in that little King Street Sherpa-town. Never mind our experience have you been to Kathmandu Ma though?

I must agree it was an experience to behold. I would not rush to go there as there will always be plenty of seating.
