Well, it is a bit of a give away… well scratch that, it IS a dead give away if I ask about things like… ummmm well if you were in the US of A and doing a little road trip between Las Vegas and San Francisco in just under three days or therabouts… what are the places you would like to see along the way. I am trying to keep Utah, Grand Canyon and the like out of this road trip… the things that jump out to me are Death Valley, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, Sequoia Natlonal Park… the list keeps growing. I am thinking about the road through Monument Valley and all the other iconic western thoroughfares that are easily accessible from the southern point of Nevada.
What are your suggestions? Have you been on this road trip or know anyone who might have? I’d love to hear from you. And yes at the end of it all there will be a visit to Fisherman’s Wharf, and probably even the boat trip to Al Capone’s Alcatraz islands…. oh this is SO EXCITING! I could go on and on but I rather hear from you!
I wander around South West several times. I remember that White Sands in New Mexico was so beautiful that it just blew my mind away for a while.
I can imagine! The very idea of Yosemite and those sub-alpine meadows are making me want to be there right now!
My husband and 2 boys are planning our first trip to the USA in September and are planning on driving from Las Vegas to San Francisco. We are having a great deal of trouble deciding on the best way to go, we have 3 days.?????? We are from Australia
Toni, I haven’t been there yet but 3 days with kids could be short, well, or so it seems, I probably be able to give you a more first hand feedback post my visit through Death Valley and Yesomite, so please do visit back.

Mariane, we had a great road trip indeed. Starting off at Las Vegas and then heading down to Death Valley, we spend the day there and went on to Ridgecrest where we stayed the night and next morning we left through parts of Seqouia on to Wowona in Yosemite. We stayed the night there and then more of Yosemite the next day and then we left Yosemite for San Francisco. Of course if you are going to go there in August you might like to see parts of Napa Valley and Tolumne Range and Lake Tahoe. We were there in March and most of it was under snow. California has amazing vistas. I look forward to posting some photos soon.
We are planning a similar trip in June. Can you give me the drive times between your above destinations? I seem to get varying times depending on the website you use. Thanks
Angela, we went from Vegas to Death Valley and stayed the night at Ridgecrest and then the next day we drove up to Yosemite. The scenery around Death Valley is spectacular you’d be much better of doing in 2 -3 day breaks. Although if you wanted to you could reach Yosemite the same day if you left early from Vegas.
I don’t remember how long it took me from Vegas to San Francisco. I stopped in the sequoias & I do remember that it was a long long way… have fun on the road!
Hi – we did it the other way round – LV – SF.
We drove first to Death Valley and stayed in Stovepipe Wells for a night. DV truely amazing. Painters Pallete, Badwater (lowest place in continental north America i believe), sandunes near stovepipe, a wonderful canyon (where we say a fighter plane soo close) just on outskirts of DV.
Then it was Reno (well Lake Tahoe)
Then Calistoga – spa town north of Sf
Then we arrived in SF.
I am planning to do the same trip but in 2 days as I have a conference to go to next year but dont have a lot of time but would love to return to Vegas.
8 Hours seems doable in a day but would prefer 2 days (us Europeans you see).
