It was the 3rd of March 2006, the day of my travel to America. I was all packed and ready to go to a land of new experiences, new adventure. I was about to embark on a journey that would take me coast to coast, southern to the northern Hemisphere, over the great wide pacific, the international date line, and meet many amazing people. David had taken half day off from work to take me to the airport. On reaching the airport my heart raced faster. I was leaving Australia, soon I would walk past the immigration line. Oh I can be a worry wart sometimes(only very rarely), in this I do justice to my dad. We had a nice Oporto meal and soon enough it was time to part
- excited, yet sad, nervous yet happy. I checked in, I could see David wave me goodbye. The lady checking me in asked if I’d packed my bags myself, Of-course i didn’t. I never do. LOL. soon I got 3 boarding passes. Sydney to San Francisco was the first one… Wait for the rest.. :). It was time to go through the immigration now.
The guy at immigration looked funny at me and asked:
Your first name is Aaaamit, right?
I said: yes.
And he echoed: I thought so too. But the system has your last-name as your first. Come through and have a seat, I won’t be long.
He was gone with my passport for less than a minute but I was restless. In a few moments more all was sorted and I got my passport back and it was time for security check. The guy doing the metal detector thingie looked at my mac and said:
Wow 17″ PowerBook, I want one.
I said: No, you can’t have mine, buy your own.
We had a laugh and a bit of a mac chat before the security check and all was swell.
I sat inside the International departure lounge, way ahead of time. As always. Bought myself a bottle of water and pulled my 17″ toy out the bag. Shame really, all 5 hotspots providers in Sydney International lounge want your money. Closed it down and got back to page 63 of “The Kite Runner“.
The next time I saw him smile unabashedly like that was twenty-six years later, in a faded polaroid photograph.
