Logging in Huon Valley — Tasmania

Logging in TasmaniaJust when you think the world is awakening to a new consciousness of preservation and keeping nature as untouched as possible comes this devastating report from ABC over new logging trials in the Huon Valley of Tasmania. It is sad, depressing, immoral and gross carelesness. Where is the education, where is the thought for the next generation and where is the inner consciousness of people who allow such things to happen? I thought I’d blog about this to voice my opinion, it saddens me deeply, it truly hurts to even hear about this.. I’ve visted the Huon Valley in the summer vacation of December 2003 and January 2004. Its a staggeringly beautiful place. Words fail me even to think of the beauty, the flora and faun of the Huon valleys and the lower Weld Valley. It is truly mesmerising!

What are these people leaving aside for the next generation, do they even care about nature. It does hurt me a lot even to think that such act of cruelty is being done legally and people who make such decisions go scott free. How is it any different from an arsonist who lights a bushfire?

LoggingI have spent only about 11 days in Tasmania and travelled nearly the whole island, well almost. It was about 2,760 Kms when we headed back to return my hire car… There were places we went past that had signs to encourage people to log… I am still willing to understand cleaning up a bit — the approach areas, to keep places and forest hazard free but to wipe off as long as your eyes see when you stand atop a cliff is not logging its murder in broad daylight! It is totally inconsiderate.

The above photos were shot my me while driving down from Wynyard, north Tasmania down to the Cradle Mountains on 27th December 2003. Whenever you go off the beaten tracks and known highways you are sure to stumble upon Logging! Miles and miles of trees cut down… right in the face. Nobody seems to notice!

Yet another indication that those who manage Tasmania’s natural resources are asleep at the wheel AGAIN.

How long before they realise that the finite resources of the Huon Valley are irreplacable?

How long before it is recongised that the key to preserving these areas are also bound to promoting Tasmania as the #1 Wilderness Tourist Attraction.

People visit Tasmania to be exposed to the old, natural beauty of the bush… you won’t have many people visitng it when it ends up looking like the Lunar Hills of Zeehan.

Wake up Tassie and protect what you have before it is too late.
