Here is a little break from all the Hobart talk…
Nearly two years ago, on vacation on the beautiful Island of Corsica, I started to write an iPhoto plugin that was able to automate all manual steps needed to attach a picture to a Gmail message. A few weeks later I gave it to my friends. From their needs and ideas grew Mailplane: A full fledged mail client for Google Mail and Mac OS X.
How about that! Born in France, inspired by a vacation in Corsica. Being struck by an idea that really works when you are on holidays is something to remember. I kinda know the feeling as i get a lot of design inspirations when travelling. Its also because the mind is set aside from the daily drivel. So, what really is MailPlane? Read on.
MailPlane is a Gmail client for Mac OS X - with bells and whistles. It works a charm has a very functional interface! Functional enough to even make me try it even though I am not much of a Gmail user. I had offered myself to be a guinea-pig till version 1 of the MailPlane was out in the wild and really liked it. Even with a good discount to buy the program too but didn’t proceed on with the idea only because I don’t use Gmail much. Well now the folks at MailPlane have released their version 2 of the app, and it seems to have some really good improvements . Here are some that caught my attention:
- Labels for conversations
- Growl Notification
- Do not Disturb mode
- OmniFocus plugin (links back to MailPlane and to conversation — clever I think!)
- Improved Attachment creation
- individual attachment optimisation
- zipping of folders on the fly
Very tempted to post the link that talks about all the goodies in version 2 but Ruben hasn’t released it out in the wild so I’d recommend you signup and try the beta. Its worth every cent if you are a Gmail user and a must have for all Gmail lovers!
So what have I got against Google? Nothing really. But I don’t want to encourage Google going on the world domination path and becoming the next Microsoft. I do agree Gmail culls spam well.
