Photoshop CS Camera Raw Plug-in adds DNG support

A much needed yet subtle move towards Standards in Digital Photography. If you read Photography journals you would already know how Canon and Nikon people fight over each others gear, native file format and picture clarity. This certainly is a great move towards a more standardised output without being biased towards any one major brand! Well done Adobe!

Adobe Systems Inc. on Monday announced an update to the free Camera Raw Plug-In for Photoshop CS, adding support for the new .DNG format. .DNG is the new “digital negative” format meant to supply an open standard to digital camera raw files. In version 2.3 of the Camera Raw plug-in, support has been added for the Canon PowerShot S60, Epson R-D1, Fujifilm FinePix S20 Pro, and Nikon Coolpix 5400 cameras. System requirements call for Mac OS X v10.2.4 or higher and Photoshop CS. The new camera support has also been added to Adobe’s recently announced Photoshop Elements 3.0.

And about time too. I do hope companies will learn that standardizing doesn’t mean that it will cut into profits but will only make users that much more friendly. In fact, I believe profits would only go up.

Totally agree there Nan, in fact standardisation will bring forth a lot of goodness, the wide spread difference of the haves and have nots come down too. Perhaps I am taking this a bit too far but I certainly believe having agreeable standards to industry products worldwide would make the world a much better place. In fact much happier.

I totally agree. In fact, I have been preaching standaridzation in a lot of arenas. Take education for example. Why is it those getting a degree in one country can’t seem to use that degree in any other country? Ok if the standards aren’t the same then let’s make it so. As technology has made this world smaller and smaller doesn’t it make sense for us all to be on the same page? Think about it!
