RoundCube Webmail

Thanks Jeremy for installing RoundCube. At Segpub you are not only looked after but you are spoilt!! :)
I have been experiementing with it for the last week and its growing on me! Not convinced about this AJAX goodie? Check out Mark Boulton’s review or if you like to sink your teeth in it here’s a little lovin’.

screengrab of RoundCube mail client in use

RoundCube Webmail is a browser-based multilingual IMAP client with an application-like user interface. It provides full functionality you expect from an e-mail client, including MIME support, address book, folder manipulation and message filters. RoundCube Webmail is written in PHP and requires the MySQL database. The user interface is fully skinnable using XHTML and CSS 2.

How cool is that? Head on over for some more screengrabs if you like.

Mmm pretty cool… although for a web application they seem to be worrying about validation too much (and, at a glance, it’s not even overly accessible — observe the absence of links on subjects! You can’t get to your email without Javascript, at all.) Gmail doesn’t validate, doesn’t even try, and it’s a great product because of it. The straight HTML version even works in Links! (I say this having had to do it before because X.org wasn’t setup/working on Ubuntu! :))

Still, it’d be great if as the software matures they can keep (improve) accessibility/validation stuff, whilst implementing various new features sported by Gmail, OWA 2003, Kerio Webmail et al.

One big difference although non-technical… Google wants to rule the earth like Microsoft dreamt. RoundCube is still beta and I don’t think it dreams of email client domination. :) They run totally different races. I wouldn’t compare the 2 is what I’m saying.

Hehe, true, but at least in terms of feature aspirations I think it’s valid to. I mean I’m not expecting it to have the same features as Gmail or Exchange OWA straight away, because obviously the resources aren’t the same… but that’s still a good level of usability to aspire to :)
