I was coming home late at night from Mosman last Tuesday. It was also Melbourne Cup day — the biggest event in Australian racing. Makybe Diva has etched a permanent place in Australian racing history by winning an unprecedented third Emirates Melbourne Cup. Wow, what a supermare!
I hopped in the cab, front seat of course, smiled and greeted the Taxi driver and let him know where I was headed and that I was paying by card! He looked at me and said ‘Hornsberry hey!’ I looked puzzled. Seconds later it dawned that he was kidding and meant Hornsby. I reclined a bit looked briefly through the shaded wind-shield into the night sky - partially clouded with a few shining twinkles now and then. We whizzed off Military Road! We talked about the weather, then about Makybe Diva, about the jockey - Glen Boss, chances that ‘On A Jeune’ and ‘Xcellent’ had. About my job, about his, the Government, IT in general, Taxi services up north, my love from driving, and then about Pacific Highway and how it skirts up all the way along the Eastern coast of Australia, then back to the ubiquitous weather again! By this stage the taxi driver was obviosuly curious and wanted to know why I worked in IT! Hmmmmm. How pleasant it is driving or even being a passenger when you have someone to talk to!
