Yojimbo – organiser for Mac OS X

UPDATE: Yojimbo widescreen view hack from HicksDesign. This will help the 2 column Yojimbo app to work in 3 columns which in my opinion is a tad more user-friendly if you have a wide screen.

BareBones has done it again!! Another great app with yet another daggy icon. Egh! You’d need 3 shots of tequila to look at it for more than half a second! So RED! So Ninja! (I don’t dislike Ninjas ) but so ‘not’ macish! Was the iconist working in dim light in an underground garage, with pirated software and more specifically designing on a Windows machine? C’mon Barebones!! Hire some good icon makers!!!!

Screengrab of the app is not bad, but wait till you see this icon link.

On the other hand though as an app Yojimbo seems excellent. Something that I have been wanting for a while now and may even consider buying. One central place to store bookmarks, serials, passwords, archives, emails and have the lot encrpted sounds like a breeze. Time saving and hassle free. However, if the logo stays the same I am not sure I’d go down that path. That logo is HIDEOUS! Sorry. I am not sure Jon would venture out to make an icon given that we was duly rewarded in the past!

  • I’ve been using Yojimbo for a couple of days but have decided not to continue – though not because of the icon, which I agree is bad!

Yojimbo shows potential, but for me to use it extensively I need better organisational presentation, such as sub-folders for the Custom Collections instead of one long list at the side. The Drop Dock is a good idea but information still needs sorting once in the program so that actually adds an extra step for me. I might look at it again in a future incarnation.

I do have DevonThink Pro which is a somewhat more sophisticated information manager and so it’s not really fair to compare, but DevonThink does have a learning curve compared to Yojimbo. But when it comes down to it, IMO Spotlight negates the need for most of Yujimbo’s information manager functionality anyway except for the password and serial number management.

For passwords I’ve been using CiphSafe for goodness knows how long and am really happy with it. It’s super-fast and it does the job. I know there are other password managers but I haven’t even bothered trying them as CiphSafe meets my needs and to me does the job better than Yojimbo.

    Just my 2 cents. :-)

  • Vicki, I agree. While Yojimbo looks good, its far from perfect in many ways and that weird ass icon makes me go mad!! I still dont understand why people would put all the time and money to do a good app and then have a logo that looks a dogs breakfast! I mean.. they do intend to sell it dont they? I havent tried the 2 you mentioned before…DevonThink Pro and CiphSafe, so will give them a try. Thanks for your inputs.

  • Hahaha Amit, that’s so funny! I was just searching on Google for “yojimbo icon” because I absolutely hate this icon, you came up 7th, congrats! :D

I downloaded it this morning and it’s already uninstalled simply because that damn icon is so distracting! The software looks great but I’m not paying for this until they fix that ugly ass icon and give me the option to move it out of the dock and into the toolbar.

  • Thanks Ian, by all mean do blog about it will you. The app as such is great but they have some real bad designers!! Look at their product logos!!! Most of them suck. Even kids could do better!
