Namesake

thumbnail of the scene from the movie 'Namesake'They are living oxymoron of the glorious past and the vibrant present. New York & Calcutta. What a brilliant exposition of the two cultures. Quaint, rich, busy, retro, dirty, and yet charming in so many ways. Sandstone buldings, the bridges Howrah and Brooklyn in the two cities arcoss the rivers Hoogly and East River. Mira Nair’s new film Namesake hit home for a lot of people who probably migrated for bigger and brighter opportunities overseas. Set in the 60’s this captivating drama is about a couples journey into building a meaningful life in a strange new society that they were quite unfimiliar with — New York!

Another gorgeous autumn weekend

It was the start of the weekend. It was Friday evening. Robyn, David and I went to the Safari bar in the Exchange Hotel in Balmain. Its a lovely pub indeed and the Brasserie menu is very reasonable. My beer battered flathead fillets with lime and corriander was rather scrumptious. If you live in the Inner West Sydney, or Sydney if at all this is a worth try. Of course we had to go to Glebe Point road for our coffee and cake tradition. It was a lovely night indeed.

Toni Collette at the Vanguard

The last time D gave me a few clues I could very well tell our venue was going to be Tabou for a scruptious meal… satisfying our inner man is important and we acknowledge that…. my clues mind you were very cryptic yet I could get my head around it. This time though, it took much longer but did work finally… :)

My 1st set of clues were: Beautiful Awkward Pictures

Scrabble on mac

Don’t you think this is a sign that I should buy the app? I played against the computer on ‘Intermediate mode’. My score: 503, Computer 201. But it did take me some time to get there. I’ve always liked Scrabble as a kid and used to play a bit in school and Uni days. The last time we played was in May 2006 at Halong Bay on the cruise. Just not often enough but this could possibly help!

Infamous - Truman Capote

a still from Truman Capotes movie InfamousSurely its been a long few days at work and home. Catching up on pending chores never seem to end… but its Thursday evening and the weekend is just around the corner and been out quite a few nights soaking up every gay movie in town given the Mardi Gras Film Festival is on. So I can’t really complaint.

The Simpsons movie buzz

Though somewhat related this isn’t quite The Singsons I’d mentioned earlier, it is the much loved and eagerly awaited ‘The Simpsons Movie’ scheduled to be launched in July 2007 Australia wide. There is much happening out in Springfields, and YouTube is slowly filling up with a lot of clever little snippets…

Devil wears Prada

logo of the movie devil wears prada, it shows a red stileto with the base as a devils pitchfork Having had a great experience(NOT) watching ‘John Tucker must die’ we’re a tad paranoid of going the movies on a Friday night. Its not quite a Friday just yet but close enough! We’re going to watch Devil wears Prada tonight and hopefully, it’d be a little entertaining, if anything. Having said that Meryl Strip is not really my kind of goddess but needless it should be fun as we are watching it in the company of good friends and like I said before hopefully, the theatre will not be filled with rug-rats popping off champagne streamers, screaming their guts off, walking about while the movie is on or even point Laser guns on the screen up someones nostrils… do people really do that in the movie theatres…. well, apparently they did seem to one Friday evening at Greater Union when we watched John Tucker must Die. Up here in country Hornsby (lovingly Hornsberry) its a whole new world at the movies on Friday nights!)

Friends with money

a still from the movie Friends with MoneyWe finally watched ‘Friends with Money’, after all the goss and rave thats been going around. About a week or maybe two earlier, I remember watching Chris Murray’s review on the movie on sunrise telly, he’d given it a rating of 4 out of 5. A good satire. The film surely has a lot of ‘modern’ comedy very carefully placed of sharply observed situations of the new millennium. Continue reading ‘Friends with money’

Varekai - Cirque du Soleil

a thumbnail of varekai - a kid in a blue suit leans on the groundDeep within a forest, at the summit of a volcano, exists an extraordinary world—a world where something else is possible. A world called Varekai. No doubt I’ll update my post after having witnessed it in the flesh and blood. Varekai in Romanian dialect of the gypsy and nomads means ‘wherever‘ Varekai is a form of expressing movement growth and the infinite passion to wander this planet. It is Cirque du Soleil’s way of paying homage to the art and spirit of circus and the tradition thereof. Continue reading ‘Varekai - Cirque du Soleil’

Iceage 2 - the meltdown slapstick

Sid swimming in melted iceThough there is no baby on board the meltdown, there still is a ‘journey‘ like most animation movies do. Scrat the squirrel is the most(me thinks) endearing character on his acorn baggery mission. He is constantly in search of nuts to hoard and bury, although his presence is noticably less as compared to the previous sequel. Manfred the mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the sabertooth tiger are on the road again. Manny fights his feelings about being the sole mammoth survivor prior the meltdown until he meets up with Emily a girl mammoth. Have to say, great animation, but when it comes to the story… hmmm… I don’t feel generous at all :) Still, its worth a watch.

The Unusual bit

Neither of us have been to the movies at 12 mid-day in a very long time. In a v-e-r-y long time!!! Coming out of a dark room into the glory and glamour of the gorgeous Sydney clear blue firmament was nothing short of painful. That felt unusual but also brought back memories of how as a kid I’d watched many movies in the middle of the day! A short walk down the memory lane as scenes from my childhood flooded my thoughts for a fleeting moment like a shimmering evanescent bubble. My eyes hurt and I squinted and blinked as much as I could. We were walking down one of the inner roads of Mosman that had amazing view of Middle head, North head, parts of Bradleys Head and the serene Balmoral beach. The sky was a painting in blue and the ocean looked like a stack of turquoise treasure with many sails afloat soaking up the soft autumn sun. I couldn’t help but stop every now and then to enjoy the view. The road meandered up the hill, down, right and left and after a few turns we came back home for a short rest before heading out for Nick’s house-warming barbie.

Mystic India rediscovers India, a land of many mysteries and fascinations, the one land that all desire to see. Home of the Himalayas, the tallest mountains, India is our world’s largest and oldest democracy, and contains an amazing wealth of wisdom, culture and spirituality. And within this earliest civilization known to mankind, lie hidden mystical secrets. It lies hidden in India’s silent spirituality, making her a mystic land of meditation, contemplation and enlightenment.

Kiki and Herb

Kiki is a washed up, boozed up chanteuse whose middle age passed her by some time ago. Herb, her piano battering, life-long accompanist, provides support both musically and emotionally. Show business has destroyed them but they cannot live without it. Featuring songs made famous by the likes of Eminem, Radiohead, Kate Bush and Britney Spears. We have booked tickets for the show on the 16th at the Opera House. woo-hoo! At table C right infront of the stage! Gosh I only hope Kiki doesn’t come bitch slapping right on our table! :)

Pride & Prejudice in the Open Air Theatre

Open air cinemaHonyea, David and I are heading down to the pompus Royal Botanic Gardens in a couple of hours from now to watch ‘Pride & Prejudice‘ in the favourite picnic spot, jogging route of the Royal Botanic Gardens a home to a magnificent collection of South Pacific plant life, an old-fashioned rose garden, a succulent garden, a dark, dingy bat colony and breath-taking harbour views. It has been overcast all day and we hope it doesn’t rain… *fingers crossed*.

This is the 9th cosecutive year that The Open Air cinemas have been screened in the Sydney Harbour against a backdrop of the city’s astonishing skyline. This years show includes 10 premiere or preview screenings. And very specially this years program also included a special live performance by the Sydney Symphony to celebrate Mozart’s 250th birthday.
